When you saw the movie (bridge on the river kwai) you have to visit this city. There is a JEATH WAR MUSEUM, where you can see a pictures from World War II, RIVER KWAI BRIDGE (river in Thai means KWAI, so it is a river called river) and Cemetery of prisoners.

("The notorious Burma-Siam railway, built by Commonwealth, Dutch and American prisoners of war, was a Japanese project driven by the need for improved communications to support the large Japanese army in Burma. During its construction, approximately 13,000 prisoners of war died and were buried along the railway. An estimated 80,000 to 100,000 civilians also died in the course of the project, chiefly forced labour brought from Malaya and the Dutch East Indies, or conscripted in Siam (Thailand) and Burma (Myanmar). Two labour forces, one based in Siam and the other in Burma worked from opposite ends of the line towards the centre" Source: Wikipedia).

Kanchanaburi is a town for one days stand. In the middle of the day we bought a ticket to the Surat Thani. I recommend FAN car. Our train runs from Rachaburi so we had to go to the bus station and there Thais showed us which bus we have to take. Be careful and don't take later bus than 4 pm when you don't want be late for an evening train.   Our bus took also children from schools to home so it was pretty crowded.

We stayed in Jolly Frog - the most popular hostel with laundry service, restaurant. Next to the hostel were the cheapest massages - I recommend oil massage. It is very relaxing and It costed only 180 BHT. Anywhere else where it was much more expensive.
