Day three, Friday the 13th and what a lucky day it is

It would be nice to have a little sunshine every now and then :)

Today is Friday the 13th, but boy, what a lucky day it is (in hindsight, of course). The sunrise is a bit cloudy today yet still beautiful and warm. A different climate is one of our reasons for traveling, but in my opinion the fun of traveling comes from making discoveries. You can discover new people, new landscapes, new languages, new ways of doing things and sometimes you even discover yourself. I think it is in the genes of mankind to venture out and explore. So, day two of any vacation is the day I wander off for my own discoveries. Over the years I have found that hiking is the best way to get to know your surroundings and the people who live there.

We don't have these back home.

Today my little hiking adventure mostly made me discover local wildlife and flora. Butterflies, goats, horses, salamander etc: one being even more beautiful and more spectacular than the other. On my hike I also discovered a path that led to the neighboring resort's beach. Two locals were catching fish in the breaks. After inspecting their catch, I discovered another path... which brought me to a vulture and a moon like coral landscape. I tell you, this hike is getting better and better. The path soon stopped but I didn't. I went on, walking along the shore, now on a rocky surface that is littered with oddly shaped corals. I think the rock I am walking on is coral too. It has razor sharp edges and I am grateful for the sturdy footwear that I am wearing. The continuous tides and bashing of the waves created gargoyle like figures and little potholes in the rocky shore. The potholes are best describes as cesspools teaming with life :).

When I recovered from being in awe of nature's beauty, I made a new discovery: I'm afraid to say that the stacking of stones madness has also reached Cuba.

Stacking madness on Cuba
You know, the non-religious piles of pebbles you find all over the world. A long time ago, somewhere, someone found it a good idea, therapeutic in fact, to stack some pebbles. Others have copied that and now you find them everywhere. I had hoped Cuba would be spared the monstrosities, but helas. When coming across one of those stacks, what can you do but add another piece to it, only to prove one man's vision of perfection is different from another man's idea of perfection :) And so I did :D

Due to gray weather we played tennis in the afternoon. In the beginning of the game (and in style with most of the fifties American cars here), we were a little rusty. However, after a few balls over the high fence, both Jacomien and I got better and more competitive :D On the other court there were three guys playing. One of them a sturdy or should I say bulky guy played an excellent game of tennis and later in the week we got to know him as Dave.., our new friend from Liverpool UK.

During my Columbus/discovery/coral walk, Jacomien found the clubhouse today where you can get your beach towels.

Under the pointy roof in the middle here, the animation team comes up with all sorts of games on a daily basis. It is also the location for the 'library'; a two shelf cupboard with perhaps twenty books in total :)
You hand the guy behind the counter your receipt and they give you your towels in return. Don't lose your towels..., it will be fifteen CUC for every single one not returned. You can change towels as much as you like, but make sure you get your receipt back at the end of your stay. After Jacomien had found the clubhouse she went looking for the library which had to be somewhere on campus too. After an extensive search she found it; two small shelves with a couple of books left by previous guests next to the Animation shack by the pool. Hardly a library, but it proved sufficient during our stay.

In the late afternoon we made reservations for the various restaurants. Although we loved the buffet restaurant, the resort offered four more a la carte restaurants to choose from. Due to repair works after last season's hurricanes, the vegetarian restaurant was out of commission so, we now had a choice of three. That was excellent because the All Inclusive Package allowed us to eat a la carte three times per week maximum.

The smoking salon where you can buy cigars is also the location of the reservations officer for dinner reservations :)
In this case we could eat at all three restaurants once. Making the reservations was more complicated than we thought. We wanted to make just one reservation for that evening but ended up with three reservations on three different dates. Not one of them being tonight, LOL. Maybe it was a bit of the old communistic red tape that made it so difficult.

So for dinner, back to the buffet restaurant it was. Not that it was a punishment, on the contrary. During dinner there was a trio playing music and singing live at the tables with couples. Jacomien is not a big fan of this sort of thing and both she and I have never damaged our hearing in discos, so we both think it is a bit loud. I thought the music was excellent, yet due to Jacomien's strong dislike of the loudness, we still worked out a scheme to make sure they wouldn't choose our table next :) Often it involved one of us going to the buffet, right after we saw the musicians decide on our table next, after which the trio decided on a different table :D

After dinner we went to lobby bar where I smoked my first cigar of this vacation, a Romeo Y Julietta #2.
Band leader... what a performer!
The coffee in the lounge is excellent. I had a brilliant frothy cappuccino. While enjoying the good coffee and the great cigar, we were treated with some fabulous music. A band had set up all their instruments and after a minute and a half sound checking, this all Cuban band started filling the lounge with gorgeous 'Buena vista social club' sounds. The leader of the band was an old and incredibly good and passionate trumpet player with cheeks like Fats Domino. Hmm Hmmm, boy did we have a ball. It was almost a pity going to bed later that night :)

It is true Vance, cairns are used for trail marking too. But this one certainly wasn't built for that purpose. This one was the result of someone's creativity and urge to put some order in this crazy world :)

For heaven's sakes, Rudolph...those 'stacks of pebbles' are cairns, which mark the trail! They are not monstrosities, but valuable markers to follow the proper course.

Are you sure your a hiker??? Just kidding, it might not be a global moniker. My favorite cairn story is when Kim and I hiked ten miles through Volcanoes National Park in 1995...around Kilauea it was pretty much a non-descript lava floor and cairns were the only way to discern the proper direction. Near a parking lot we came upon a family (from New York) who had daringly ventured a hundred yards away from their car and asked us how knew where to walk.

"We are following the cairns" I responded.

"What's a cairn?" the wife (in high heels with an outrageously huge pocketbook replied).

"Well, you're sitting on one!" I replied........
