Barksdale, the sign was a little dirty
Living so close to Louisiana, I find it to be the perfect place to take friends and family when they come out to visit. I also find that this is a perfect place to escape and recharge. I often go over and visit with one of my friends and we find ourselves eating at some of the most incredible place and visiting some interesting places. This weekend we took my friends, visiting from Australia, to see the planes at the Air Museum at Barksdale Air Force Base. This was a great place to walk around and see some of the actual planes used in various wars around the world. These planes range from the small prop engine to the incredible supersonic SR-71. Thy even have a Russian Mig 21 on display. There are also bombers, fighters and transport planes that you can walk up and touch. The outside area is still being worked on and new displays are being added.
The best part of this experience was watching the young children get excited about the planes and what they all stood for: freedom. The children were there with their parents and we all stopped to exchange stories about our experiences with different planes and the space shuttle. The Space Shuttle entered he conversation as we discussed different bases across the country and our relationship to each one. I started talking about how my brother is an air traffic controller and has had the opportunity to land the Space Shuttle. One of the men there had to one up me by showing a photo of the piggy back ride of the space shuttle back to Florida as it made a stop in Louisiana. Well, I had to up him by telling him that I have actually seen them placing the shuttle on the 747 I CA as well as viewed a live launch in Florida. It was a lot of fun talking with them.
Here are a few photos of some of the planes. There are so many specifics about each plane, but self discovery seems to be a fun thing to do.
