Grounds of the Millenium Hotel behind main hotel
During 2005 and 2006, I worked a 12 month contract in the Middle East. We would fly from the US to Dubai on commercial flights and take a charter flight from Dubai to our destination. We were able to tour parts of Dubai but never had enough time for a complete tour. And most of the workers were mainly interested in meeting women and normally spent all their time going to clubs. Many of them went to the York Club quite successfully. I went one time with my coworker and it was a wild place. Luckily I had only about a free hour before I had to go catch my flight and did not have enough time to get into any trouble. :)
Much of Dubai reminds one of a western city.
The streets are very clean and I understand the police are very strict. Dubai is an ethnic melting pot and I saw people from many different countries living and working in Dubai. I understand from talking with workers still in the Middle East that Dubai’s economy has lost much of its strength since 2008 but in 2005 and 2006 it was very strong.
Me inside the City Center Shopping Mall
We went to several shopping centers in Dubai and most of the ones I saw differed from US style shopping centers and malls with smaller ground space but with many floors, sort of a vertical mall rather than a horizontal mall like you normally see in the US. It was fun going to all the shops and seeing different things from what we are accustomed to seeing. And of course I always enjoy sampling the local food. We saw a lot of western style fast food eateries inside the large shopping malls and it was interesting to study the standard fast food signs that were also written in Arabic.

Developers were just beginning to fill in the gulf shore and off shore for more housing area on the beachfront and at the end of my photos there is a one short video clip of this new “beachfront” taken from the air as our plane was making a final approach to Dubai airport. This was a massively ambitious project and has advanced a great deal since this video was taken.
We always felt safe in Dubai and enjoyed the city very much. Our employer had us attend safety of traveling classes before we left the US but I think common sense of how to behave in a foreign country along with respect for the local culture is all that is necessary in this city. This is one destination I would return for another visit.
