Holy shit, what a difference 3 years makes. Seems like I'm just a kid in this picture.
It's a real shame I can't remember all the intricate details of my trip 3 years later so this is going to be pretty condensed!
We spent about 4-5 cruising through the North Island. Once you get out of Auckland, green fields and sheep are everywhere. I swear i've never seen such a lush landscape, even the roads seemed like they were growing. Driving on the other side of the road was quite an experience; thankfully I didn't do any of the city driving. A couple times I found myself drifting into the other lanes and not realizing it for a while, thank god for the open road lol.
We passed through Taupo and camped / stayed in hostels on our way to Wellington.
An amazing shot taken by Tal. I *think* this was from the North Island.
I've got to say, out of all the hostels i've ever stayed in, the ones in NZ were the friendliest. The places usually had between 10-30 beds and it was easy to strike up a conversation with anyone. NZ definitely caters to the more eco conscious, relaxed, open minded traveler while OZ and Thailand
cater more to larger groups of partiers looking for a drunken good time.
The second or third Lord of the Rings movie had been released around the time we were there which was a boom for local tourism. This was quite apparent in NZ's capital of Wellington
where LotR themes were everywhere.
Sadly I don't have too many pictures of this leg of the trip to jog my memory but i'll publish the ones I do have. Looking back, it would have been nice to visit the north end of the north island but time wasn't on our side. Everyone we had spoken to said that you should spend the majority of your time in the south island which is what we did!
