Arriving at Beijing

During the 5 hour flight to Tianjin, I can hardly sleep. The Chinese girl sitting next to me was chatty and told me a lot of travel information about Tianjin and Beijing. We arrived at Tianjin airport at 6am. It was 6 degree outside. 0_0 I was positive I read that the temperature should be 23C. Oh well, I guess I forgot to check the minimum temperature. After spending half an hour at immigration counter, I took an airport bus to Tianjin railway station. From there, I boarded the bullet train to Beijing. In a blind of an eye, I arrived at Beijing.

At 10.30am, I reached Beijing south railway station which is connected to Beijing subway station. I was clueless on where I should go next. The conference I will be attending is held at Jiuhua Resort which is very far from city centre. I have to reach there at 6pm. So I have plenty of time to tour around Beijing city. I was afraid I will not have the chance on my way back.

It was then a group of travelers approached me and we have a chat.
Two local Chinese and an Argentinian fella named Jose. We took the same flight from KL. Since I have nowhere to go, I was more than happy to join them. We took the subway to reach Beijing downtown. Then, the two local Chinese parted with us after giving us the directions to get to Nan Luo Gu Xiang (南罗"巷) which is where Jose planned to stay. Being able to read and speak Mandarin fluently, I acted as a guide and translator. :p In return, I left my luggage in his room until i go to the conference venue in the afternoon.

Our first experience with Beijing public bus was horrible. After we came out of the subway, we followed the direction given by our local Chinese friend. We crossed the road and waited at the bus stop only to find that the bus won't stop there. So we spend the next 20 minutes looking for the right bus stop and later found out that we waited for right bus but wrong direction.
The bus driver attitude was not friendly. Looks like our friend's memory was not that good after leaving Beijing for 3 years. We had to walk back to the subway station to take the bus.

Despite that, we had a great day. First, we had lunch at a Chengdu restaurant (成都小吃店). 小吃 means special food or snack. You can easily find noodles and fried rice in these restaurants (小吃店) for cheap price. After filling our stomach, we looked for a travel agency but there's none in sight. That's weird. Anyway, we found some attractive tour packages offered by a hotel which has a receptionist with enough English. For awhile, I pretended I can't understand Mandarin and see how well is her English. Hahaha After getting the info we needed, she gave us free map and we left happily (of course we said we will come back again to buy the tours). :p

With the map in hand, we go to the bell and drum tower ('"楼) just 5 minute walk away. They are two huge ancient tower standing opposite each other. We paid only 15 yuan to visit both towers. Half price even for international student... I love China now! As usual, the security scans your bag and belonging before entering. Once we got in, a long steep climb was waiting for us. Hehe... it's pretty scary at first but we made it to the top. At the top, we can see nice view of Beijing and Temple of heaven. At the drum tower, we managed to catch the drum performance. It's very impressive.

In the afternoon, I bid farewell to my new friend and took the subway to Beijing outskirt. Then I took a bus to Jiu Hua Resort where the conference is held. I spent at least half an hour looking for the right bus stop. It's amazing how my cheap luggage bag can withstand all the pulling and dragging in a day. I almost missed the dinner. The organizing committee messed up the hotel arrangement. What a tiring day!
