this morning we left the glorious city of rome...it was a bittersweet departure...it is a fantastic yet chaotic city....so it was great to see the sites, but in the same breath it was nice to move on to a smaller city, with less people, less craziness...etc..

off we went...a fairly early morning as we headed north and out of rome. our final destination for today is florence. along the way, we had a chance to stop at one of the most recognized icons of italy....can anyone guess....ok, pisa...

pisa is an interesting place, formerly a major city back in the 10th and 11th century due to its location, on a river, which leads to the sea...however, as all things do...the river changed course...dried up...and now there is no river, and practically no city... there is another river however, which is downstream from florence, and many florentines pee in the river, as it is pisas source of drinking water...as you can see, they dont like each other...what else is new in italy...someone is always better than the other...

anyhow, during their golden age, they built a church, how original...then they thought it would be fitting to build a bell tower...once again, how original...well, after 5 years of construction, the tower started to lean....they tried to fix it many times, but in the end it took 200 years to complete...so in actuality it looks more like a banana....ironically, the original architects name something along the lines of bananila...anyway since its completion, they have tried to stabilize the structure to ensure it wouldnt topple, and recently they had success using steel supports...it is supposedly safe for another 200 years....

so pisa is an interesting place, the only thing there really is the main square which is home to the church, and the tower...the town would not exist without it...as it would be a ghost town overnight...so you drive to the middle of nowhere for the cheesie kodak moment with the tower, pretending to hold it up, push it or whatever suites your fancy....sure, im guilty too...got my photos...and then looked for gelato...it is something worth visiting, once, it was smaller than expected..but i guess you could see that coming as it is plastered all around the world as the icon of this boot shaped country...

the coffee gelato was good, and we pushed on to florence...it was nice to arrive in the city in the early evening...we are staying at the hotel donatello near center...so for the first time we will not have to use mass transit...just our good ol feet....

i decided to enjoy some time away from the group...and went for a stroll...i found a small pasteria, where i enjoyed some spaghetti and tomato sauce...yum for sure...then went for a stroll through some of the street markets...

i decided not to celebrate halloween with the aussies, for a number of reasons..first, its not even celebrated in australia...and second, they are going to a tourist trap disco...no thanks....

so it was a relaxing evening... good for rest before a long day of walking through florence tomorrow...

i did a quick tally, not counting my flight...i have traveled 2100 miles thus far...

happy halloween....and save some candy corn for me..
