Banana Leafs!
Today after class, we all decided to head down to little India to go shopping and eat at a highly rated restaurant called "The Banana Leaf".  The shopping was a bit of a let down...but the restaurant was really awesome!  You actually ate off of a banana leaf!  Katie decided that she wanted to try the leaf, and she scraped some of it off and mixed it with her rice!  She swore it was delicious and talked me into eating it...I personally felt it just tasted like a leaf....haha!  It was still fun though!

Yesterday a group of us were able to talk to our history professor for a long time and we found out that he lived in Shanghai while Mao was in power (which is the era we were learning about).  He had 7 brothers and sisters and remembers the famine because they all had to eat sweet potatoes since rice was a luxury but they couldn't ever eat enough to be full because if they did that would mean that one of their siblings would be hungry.

His dad was put in jail for 7 years by Mao because he wouldn't conform to the communist ideals.  My professor was part of the red army for a while, but he said that he was excited when Mao passed away.  I think that it is so cool that we are getting to learn this history from someone who actually lived through communism!

I was also able to attend a "Star Party" which was put on by the Astronomy Club right outside of our dooms.  I know, something only a Tech student would be excited about!  It was really awesome because they had these really amazing telescopes.  The club thought that we were pretty dumb for a while because none of us knew about the Southern Cross...then we realized that its because we use the North Star.  You can't see the North Star here!!!  Most of the stars I see at night I have never seen before.  That just blows my mind!  My favorite thing that I saw was called the Jewel Box.  It was a cluster of about six stars of all different colors which were visible through the telescope.

Tomorrow we get to go on our first field trip to a museum called the "Images of Singapore!"  I'm excited! :-)
