Staff ready to greet campers

WE ARE READY! Training week is complete, we have learned the groups that we will be have for the following week and we are in our still questionable purple staff shirts. Some like the color and design, some staff members don't. The counselors have already been over in LA for 24 hours collecting kids off of buses and planes from all over the States, Canada and other international countries. The instructors have been at camp decorating and cleaning the facilites and the kitchen is preparing up to 300 plates for the first dinner! Then we hear one long blast of the air horn! It's game time!

We are anxiously sitting on the pier waiting for the arrival of the Big Red Boat. We are warming up, cheering, running around creating all the energy so that when the first boat of kids arrive, they are just as pumped and stoked to be here as we are.

They are ready to get off the boat

And when it does pull up, the kids are on the boat, waving their arms and cheering too. The ropes are thrown, we are tying the boat off, timing staff for fun to set the ramps and get things ready for the unloading of the first Jr. Sea Campers of 2006. And then there they are. One by one stepping off the boat with a piece of luggage making their way past several instructors all greeting them with big smiles. They begin to climb the ramp and there is even more instructors screaming and hollaring with the excitement of seeing "Ben" back for another year and "Sally" with a recognisable sweatshirt from last years camp. I loved the high fives, the waves, the big smiles, the little girl carrying the oversized suit case or sleeping bag and just how great the feeling I had when everyone was so happy and unbelievable stoked to be there!

The campers make their way down a long pier where they are greeted with a soda, or water and a snack.

The munchkins have arrived! the instuctors go wild!
Then they are whisked off to an area near the campfire on the beach, where they will meet Ross and Kristi the owners of the camp. Ross will usually ask in a very loud burly voice "HOW DO YOU FEEL?" to which returning campers and staff members will reply, "WE FEEL GOOD! OH WE FEEL SO GOOD! YEAH!" And there they are welcomed to Toyon Bay! From there, their counselors will take them on a tour of the camp showing them where all their activities will be, where they will eat and also where they will sleep. After a great BBQ dinner outside, a excellent peformance of Rules done by the councelling staff, the sun is setting and it is time for the opening campfire.

Now only after 3 rehersals, counsellors and instructors have come up with skits about anything they feel like or come up with.

Captain America says brush your teeth!
This year in particular our group of 7 did a skit along the lines of The Wizard of Oz, with the exception of it being the Wizard of Ross (for the camp owner). It all began when a camper fell asleep and was caught in a nightmare, trying to find her way to camp. Along the way she met a hippy style piece of kelp, looking to return to Catalina Island as he had drifted away when he lost his kelp raft. Then she met a Blacksmith fish that was trying to get her spots back. and lastly the little girl met buffalo (as there are buffalos on the island since a film was made so many years ago and they left 8 buffalos on the island and now there is about 50) and the buffalo had pink eye (as pink eye was a common thing to be spread and kinda funny) Eventually the girl makes it to the island, and asks the Wizard of Ross to let her goto camp this year.
Dork Box Skit
And of course he does. Other skits followed Captain America and good rules to live by. EX: Brush your teeth, drink milk, eat your veggies ect. Another skit joked about the Harbour Master cause he could be quite set in his ways sometimes. So not only were these skits funny for the kids, but there was some interesting inside jokes and not so good inuendo, but of course we laughed like hell and the kids were to young to get it.

And here ends arrival day for Jr. Sea Camp. There is an amazing week to come!
