WE ARE READY! Training week is complete, we have learned the groups that we will be have for the following week and we are in our still questionable purple staff shirts. Some like the color and design, some staff members don't. The counselors have already been over in LA for 24 hours collecting kids off of buses and planes from all over the States, Canada and other international countries. The instructors have been at camp decorating and cleaning the facilites and the kitchen is preparing up to 300 plates for the first dinner! Then we hear one long blast of the air horn! It's game time!
We are anxiously sitting on the pier waiting for the arrival of the Big Red Boat. We are warming up, cheering, running around creating all the energy so that when the first boat of kids arrive, they are just as pumped and stoked to be here as we are.
And when it does pull up, the kids are on the boat, waving their arms and cheering too. The ropes are thrown, we are tying the boat off, timing staff for fun to set the ramps and get things ready for the unloading of the first Jr. Sea Campers of 2006. And then there they are. One by one stepping off the boat with a piece of luggage making their way past several instructors all greeting them with big smiles. They begin to climb the ramp and there is even more instructors screaming and hollaring with the excitement of seeing "Ben" back for another year and "Sally" with a recognisable sweatshirt from last years camp. I loved the high fives, the waves, the big smiles, the little girl carrying the oversized suit case or sleeping bag and just how great the feeling I had when everyone was so happy and unbelievable stoked to be there!
The campers make their way down a long pier where they are greeted with a soda, or water and a snack.
Now only after 3 rehersals, counsellors and instructors have come up with skits about anything they feel like or come up with.
And here ends arrival day for Jr. Sea Camp. There is an amazing week to come!
