Dien Bien Phu might only be 30 K from the border (all bitumen) and the destination Muang Khoua a further 50k or so, (dirt but being upgraded) it is still a 6.5 hour trip over steep terrain, mostly very narrow roads. Fortunately the road was dry and the bus full without being overloaded. Not for the faint hearted and definitely not to be taken when there's rain about, wet it would be scary. (cost 75,000 VND, less than US$5) It is not all travel time, uploading the returning remote villagers who'd been to town shopping (fresh vegetables and groceries etc) took the most time, the border exit and entry was smooth and quick. The mountain views were great. Arriving at the mighty Nam Ou river you have two choices, wait for the barge to take you across, or take the boat for a small fee of 10,000 Kip (a bit over a $1), the just turns around and goes back. I think it could be a little unsettling for some travelers to realize how remote and, particularly, how far away from help in event of an accident or ill-health the place is. If the bus trip does one thing, it convinces you that the best way to leave the place is by boat.
