The girl's house

On the Monday Paulina’s sister and niece, Valeria and 6 year old Alana arrived from Chile.  They had come over for a couple of weeks to see Africa.  The plan was to see the famous Kruger Park, I think the largest wild game park in the world and then to the Mozambique coast.

The Landrover was giving a bit of trouble proving difficult to start in the mornings, didn’t like cold starts (like me! hahaha), it was almost freezing temperatures.  At 7am on the cold morning to drive to the airport she refused to start, arse!  Corrie gave me the keys to Reon’s Pajero and we collected a tired couple of girls at the airport, Chile football fans had kept the people awake on the plane.

Spotting hippos from the roof...
Back in Randburg I went to see Bushlore again about the Landrover not starting and Rob came out.  We eventually got it started with the help of a bump start.

They had changed a couple of glow plugs when I first picked it up and now changed the fuel regulator but the pump was making a loud noise that I wasn’t happy with…  With no more ideas I took it to a Landrover dealer, after explaining the history he pointed to a very small inline micro fuel filter above the main fuel filter but they had none in stock, Nelspruit Landrover had them in stock.  This small filter becomes clogged from bad fuel and being a self drive safari 4x4 it’s been out of South Africa more than a few times and had dodgy diesel from dodgy places (something I’m always careful about when selecting fuel stations down here).  The noise from the fuel pump in the tank was because it is under stress pushing the fuel through and in the cold mornings it was finding it more difficult.

Hippos!!
Back at Bushlore we changed the small micro filter from another Landrover and the main fuel filter was changed again.  Back at Corrie’s I picked up the girls and we were off to Kruger Park, this took us past Nelspruit to get the micro filter.

We arrived in Kruger National Park hoping to see the Big Five, Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo and Lion.  It wasn’t long until we saw some elephants, Alana was happy.  We saw lots of animals, a lion and her cubs, giraffe, zebra, impala, kudu, hippo, crocodile, plus many many more but not the leopard from the Big Five.  Kruger dates back to 1898, has about 147 mammal species, more than 507 bird species, 114 reptiles amongst other species.

Giraffe crossing the road!!
Kruger Nation Park in South Africa also borders Limpopo National Park in Mozambique, beside each other it is unfenced and is about half as big.  Driving from the north gate to south will take 18hours 30min (not breaking the slower speed limits inside), at 463kms.  There are many busy fenced camps within that you have to be inside before nightfall.  Did you know mosquitoes kill more people than any other creature in Africa followed by hippo!  We all had a great time in the park and I enjoyed driving the 4x4 tracks, Valeria/Alana almost got a 3000RAND fine (300GBP) getting a photo taken outside the vehicle with a couple of giraffe behind!  Oh and the Landrover was starting much better with the new small fibre micro filter I changed.

Next was Blyde River Canyon resting for a few days in South Africa at a camp with a heated swimming pool.

Later on the way I picked up another small micro filter (well worth carrying a spare!) and a set of oils, gearbox, transmission...  Soon after the orange engine warning came on again, and again!  Not good and went back to the Landrover dealer.  I convinced them to have a quick look for me and the fault log showed a magnetic pickup fault, thankfully I got it booked in for first thing the next morning but I knew an intermittent fault was extremely difficult to trace!  Next day I had a text by noon saying it was ready to be collected, success!! Turned out a wire had worn through and was earthing on the body, a small thing but would have stopped us from moving unless fixed.

I really hoped that nailing these faults would end to these problems.

Is that an elephant?
I somehow felt that some of these problems could have been avoided but the Landrover didn’t avoid the bush mechanics in its life…
