We got the train from Bangkok to Ayutthaya and spent the 1.5 hour journey in third class among the locals (Roughing it!)! It was hot, stuffy and packed, but an experience. We arrived in Ayutthaya, the former Royal Capital and took a walk to check out some temple ruins we'd circled on our map. Along the way we passed Elephant village where we saw some Elephants taking japanese tourists for a ride! We found the impressive ruins of Baan Th Dusit an bumped into the Elephants again (this was the closest we'd ever been to an Elephant.), where one of the Japanese guys generously gave me a banana to feed his Elephant :D

We decided to go and check out Elephant village on our way back into central Ayutthaya (much to our dismay) and didn't stay long. The Elephants were tied up with no room to move around, and they looked and sounded a bit distressed. The last nail in the coffin came when one of the handlers took the blunt side of his pick axe and whacked the poor heffalump on it's head :'( (we vowed never to give money to an organisation like that if we were to do an Elephant ride.)

We went back to the train station where we got a boat taxi across the river into the centre, went in search of lunch and ended up at a restaurant on the riverbank (which wasn't much to write home about! But I suppose we are!).

After lunch we went for a walk around, stumbled across a flower market (we decided we didn't have enough pics of flower markets so stopped to admire and snap away!), and even more ruins. These were surrounded by a network of streams and rivers (which were home to an awesome amount of Monitor Lizards, one of which we even saw chowing down on a turtle!) and we spent a few hours here exploring.

The sun had got to our heads and worn us out (I even had to don Han's sarong as a bandana! Sad I know!!) so we decided to call it a day and head back to our hotel.
