the train from venice arrived at ljubljana at about 1:40 am, i said goodbye to the man inside the cabin and wished him well in his trip to serbia, as we got out of the train, oh my god! it was soooooooo cold! it didnt helped that it was also windy! the wind-chill factor was totally freezing, i couldnt even speak straight to byiang and worse - think!!!
good thing i made a mental map of ljulbljana already, because its so hard to communicate between me and byiang as the cold and wind blasted our bodies - but all we have to do is find miklošičeva cesta and it goes straight to our hostel! its about a kilometer walk from the central station at masarykova cesta.
while walking in the streets of ljubljana, it felt so much different from venice, because its the first time in 2 days since i saw traffic - cars on the road and on the streets! lol and so many people outside even at this hour while in venice, its empty already. we passed so many streets, and we finally came to miklošičeva cesta and double checked the hostel direction - it was right! so we turned and just followed the street down until we cameto the 3 bridges across the river - ljubljanica.
it was amazing - because the street - miklošičeva cesta - is the main street of ljubljana as it goes down to prešernov trg - or presseren square - the main square in ljulbjana! it was adorned with blue lights all over, and the famous cathedral in the pictures can be seen even if its a little bit dark - the pink church frančiškanska cerkev marijinega oznanjenja - the franciscan churh of annunciation! i was getting excited and i am sure it will be hard for me to sleep! after we crossed the famous 3 bridges across the ljubljanica river, into the street or a promenade in the river - cankarjevo nabrežje - then search for alibi hostel which is just beside casablanca cafe - sounds easy for us!
we passed so many stalls for the christmas market! and me and byiang were excited to explore them in the daylight - we walked through the cobbled stoned street where byiang's trolley was so loud! lol hahahaha but then, we passed the whole cankarjevo nabrežje and we couldnt find the shotel - we walked further and byiang said to stop because it is already another street - gallusovo nabrežje, we reatced our steps but it was no use, it was really cold, windy and my body really needed some sleep.
we thanked her and said goobye to each other! i just rolled my eyes - because the sign casablanca bar something was so small! lol it was easy to miss! inside the hostel, there was a bit of complication as we booked for the 16th, but we arrived midnight, so we should have booked on the 15th, but how was i supposed to know that?! anyway, i pleaded to the reception if they have 2 more rooms to spare for the night, since its impossible to stay outside in the cold, and luck again was on our side as they have 2 more rooms available, we checked in and the friendly staff went with us to our room, gave us the locker keys and went off, lol - inside the room, the guys who were checked in had loud voices talking, i groaned, because it would be hard for me to sleep and then it would be harder if they conversed all the way through the night, after i brushed my teeth, and prepared to go to bed, byiang gave me some sleeping pills to help me sleep, i set my alarm for 9 am as check out time is at 10 am, before i even knew it - i was in deep sleep!
the next morning i woke up ahead of the alarm - at 8 am, the guys inside the room, were not as wild as i thought them to be and they were sleeping like grown babies lol, i still went to sleep for an hour and woke byiang at 9:30 am.
we went back again to the central station and bought tickets back to venice - this time byiang did it that so that we would not have mistakes again! lol the train leaves at sunday at 2:00 am! arrrghhh no choice - as i said, if we want to go to slovenia - we cant be picky as its the only train schedule going back! lol hahahah - then we had breakfast at mcdonalds, i ordered so much, but i still couldnt eat as its too early in the morning for me.
we headed back to the main square and looked at the christmas markets and decided to go to the castle! lubljanski grad! the funicular going up was so expensive - 10 euros! so even if its a steep walk - we walked up - pity it was so foggy in ljubljana :( we could not see the snow covered kamnik alps atop the castle, then we headed down to see the vegetable market and some more christmas markets!
at 2 pm, it was time to meet janja- we agreed to meet at prešernov trg near the big christmas tree lol! it wasnt hard to find janja, as i saw her trying to call my number! wahahaha as we met, we hugged each other! it was so nice to meet janja! because after all, she will come with me to iceland next year! she is the friend of maike, who is my co-organizer for the iceland trip!
we asked janja which restaurant would be nice to eat, but she asked us what do we want to eat! lol - then byiang automatically said - SLOVENIAN! lol - so we went into a nice slovenian restaurant and ordered, it was amazing as the restaurant reminded me of the slovak pub in bratislava! i ordered of course - the soup inside a strong bread - typical slavic cuisine! it was delicious and over meal, me, byiang and janja talked alot! i like these girls - well because our age belongs in a group lol - so we had so many things to talk about! after we finished lunch, we asked janja were to find the dragon statue, as we went there - we passed the flower market and until the dragon statue/s which janja told us that they are the guardians of ljubljana!
janja doenst have much time, because she has to go to work, but we will meet her again at 8:30 because she offered us a ride to kranj where we will meet barbara and jernej! she is so nice!!! well slovenians are so nice! till now - i couldnt complain! after that - byiang and me decided to buy some souvenirs and then went back to the hostel common room, as it is tooooo cold! i am even wearing so many layers, the problem was im only wearing normal socks and converse - my feet were cold!
it was boring killing time at the common room in the hostel, using internet, dozing a bit in the sofas - then it got a little bit exciting as a hord of british lads were there wearing elf bonnets thinking that they were cool and one complaining that someone broke through their room and stolen something lol hahaha.
about 5 pm - me and byiang decided to go out again and have dinner, but first we have to go to the supermarket and buy batteries for my camera, the cashier at the supermarket was so über friendly and helpful, i forgot that in slovenia, they speak german, but i kept speaking in english the whole time, aaargghh it would be impossible for me to speak 3 languages at the same time as i was already speaking tagalog with byiang! arrrghhh.
after buying at the supermarket, we walked again to the ljublanica promenade and found a nice looking restarant - it was all red inside! lol and mismashed of mexican, slovenian and french cuisines! lol - byiang had mexican and i had crepe, then me and byiang discussed how economically rich slovenia is, compared to other eastern european countries.
we walked back again to the square and was well lighted by blue lights and all sorts of christmasy atmosphere was in the air! even the christmas carols were playing all over in the old part of the city because the speakers were sattered around! kids and babies with their parents were shopping or eating hot chestnuts in the christmas market! the cold air - and christmas carols in the background, it was so surreal and to top it off, ljubljana was in full party as in the square, they were having some mini concert of some sort!
at 8 pm, we went back to the hostel and gathered our things, said goodbye to the receptionist and walked to where janja was waiting for us in her car!
it was a little bit said leaving ljubljana in its party and christmay atmosphere, but in the coming night, we will be back again and i hope to experience more!
