I guess Sochi is not very famous abroad. But it certainly will become known in 2014 when such an important for Russia event will take place there. Winter Olympics 2014 is not just another sports competition, it has grown into a national idea, a matter of the strategic importance and a highly prioritized governmental project. Strangely enough, it will be the first winter Olympic games held in Russia - the land symbolizing winter to so many people! Expectations are high, and the whole country is looking forward to turning an undeveloped resort town into the XXI century sports center with modern facilities and infrastructure.
Sochi is situated along the Russian Black Sea coast and it includes several smaller towns and settlements to the north and south of its central part which makes it one of the longest cities in Europe (145 km).
I spent my honeymoon there and wasn't impressed with the sea or the city itself but Caucasus is something unforgettable. It is really worth exploring, and for adventurous hearts the region further to the south (Abkhazia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia) can be just the perfect travel destination. Certainly not overrated ;) I wouldn't recommend Sochi for the next 4 years as it must be now just a big construction site. But everyone - welcome to the city in 2014 and I hope to see you there!! :)
