Indian Train
So here we go then, chello! 4am start to catch train to Jaipur, how exciting, love being on the road. Leaving in what felt like middle of night, seriously sleep deprived, slight hangover, thought the porter had disapeered with my backpack. Where the hell has this guy gone? The guest house was located opposite a major construction site for the 2010 commonwealth games (not a chance in hell they are going to be ready for this by the way). Turns out that this had closed the road overnight so had a bit of a hike to the pickup point down a very interesting very dark very bumpy, very smelly (eau de Delhi) sidestreet. Great, enough to fully wake up the senses! Bumpy bus ride made me wish I was wearing a sports bra then got to train station which was completely amazing, diversity of life on full display smacks you round the face.
Our Palace!
Rich, poor, hindus, sikhs, families, street people, schoolkids, people washing, meditating, sleeping, spitting, pissing, yikes! surprisingly no other westerners that i noticed. Started to really get a feel for the way things are and actually wished that I could just sit in the station for half an hour and people watch! But we had a train to catch...

Didn't expect much from the train but was a great experience. Have a slight fondness for Indian trains before I even got there as my great- grandfather was involved in building the trainline infrastructure during British colonial times, so I was very excited. Comfy seats, free coffee, breakfast (curry number 3!), even a free newspaper. Certainly felt relaxed, looked after and loving being on the road. The surprise when we got to Jaipur was that we were to sleep in a palace, Bissau palace, a little oasis in the centre of the city! OMG, completely lost for words, just stunning.
Jaipur Street Scene
The rooms kind of hippy chic come colonial style, courtyards and beautiful gardens.

First impressions of Jaipur, holy cow, they were everywhere, in the road, pavements, in the markets, shopping cetres you name it. Not only cows but a random assortment of animals freely roaming, camels, pigs, oxen, horse, monkeys, chipmonks and chickens, so many chickens.Visited Jantar Mantar observatory which was quite interesting. The guide there used a very fancy sundial, looked like some kind of modern sculpture, to tell the time to the nearest few seconds, then using astrology predictions and other things such as my time of birth, worked out that I was taller than my mother!! Yeah right, well I am slightly but whatever. Did a tour of the Hawa Mahal Palace, where we encountered our first of many paparazzi experiences where Indian tourists and locals would want their picture taken with me and Linds and shake our hands! Nice to feel famous... Curry number 4, assuming was made with the freshest free range chickens judging by the ones we saw being slaughtered in the next street, along with a dog being beheaded yikes! We decided this part of the city was called the 'slaughter quarters'.
