Blarney Castle and the Fairy Glen

Blarney Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

In July and August of 2000, my parents and I visited my mom's family in Donegal, Ireland. We decided to take in the rest of the country while we were at it, as well as visit Scotland, my dad's ancestral home.

Blarney Castle and the Fairy Glen

In typical tourist fashion, we stopped in Blarney to kiss the Blarney Stone.  Yes, it's a bit cheesy, but I rather enjoyed the experience.  See my review for more info.

The Fairy Glen and the Wishing Steps are in the wooded area surrounding the castle.  I can't remember the legend precisely, but if you walk up the Wishing Steps backwards and with your eyes closed, I think you're supposed to have good luck.   Regardless, it was a fun experience overall. =)

The castle is old and magnificent, and the surrounding area, in my opinion, epitomizes Ireland - green, mystical and beautiful. Once you get over being slightly put off by the fact that hundreds of thousands of other people have kissed the same rock that you're putting your mouth on, it's kind of fun to get caught up in the legend of it all.
