A visit with Nessie

Inverness Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

In July and August of 2000, my parents and I visited my mom's family in Donegal, Ireland. We decided to take in the rest of the country while we were at it, as well as visit Scotland, my dad's ancestral home.

A visit with Nessie

Outside the Loch Ness cafe
Although I was dismayed to discover that the majority of our Scotland photos have vanished, the fact that I lost all of my Loch Ness pictures pains me most of all.  For the most part, I enjoy going to a place and pretending to be a local (as of this trip, however, I hadn't yet cultivated this art form), but sometimes I do enjoy being a tourist...and Loch Ness was one of those times.  We spent hours wandering around Castle Urquhart and the lake itself, looking for Nessie, etc.  Surprisingly enough, it wasn't terribly crowded...I had expected it to be swarming with visitors, like Blarney was, but apparently it's not as popular of a destination as one might otherwise think.  Alas, we had no sightings of the famed Loch Ness Monster, but we had a good time being cheesy tourists, nevertheless.
