Waking up early and finding the way to go to one of the most beautiful places in the Cauca Valley
October 24, 2009
Waking up early is not a surprise, hahaha. Just wanted to visit the "Hacienda El Paraiso" and in order to go there, you need to take a bus. Fortunately I found a lady at the hostel, who could give me some advice about how to go to the terminal. She mentioned something about a train, but there are no trains here, mmm. Last night the girl at the front desk suggested to take a cab, but the terminal is just walking distance, hehehe. It wasn't sunny when we left, but still warm. Last night streets were so busy and today they were really empty and quiet. Did anyone say hangover?
Would we go straight to the terminal? Well, what about having breakfast first? ooops! I saw a brochure of a bakery just 1 block away from the hostel. Last night it was closed, but not today. It looked empty, but I was looking just one side, when I gave a closer look, the place was packed! Always a good sign. A juice! But this time I remember to order it without milk. And it was so good! I needed some mora (blue berry) in my system, hehe. They have everything for breakfast here: eggs, bread, omelettes, empanadas, coffee, juices, fruit, etc. Shawn got an arepa with egg. Yesterday's arepa wasn't that good, but this one was so tasty. The egg wasn't too boiled and the yolk was still liquid inside. Delicious! I was wondering how many eggs they used to cook this, hahaha. He ordered also a coffee and I got a fruit salad. Actually he did it too, copycat! After a delicious breakfast it was time to look for the terminal. It shouldn't be that difficult to find it ;)
We started to walk to the terminal or at leas I thought I was walking in the right way, hahaha. Have to accept I was a bit - yes just a bit - lost :P It was early and there weren't many people on the streets, but fortunately there was a young lady sweeping her house entrance. I asked her for directions and her cute little son repeated everything she said and pointed the right way, everyone is so friendly!!! After a couple of minutes walking there was the big avenue and the bridge we had to cross. The landmark was the Social Security Building, checked!
It was bussier here... once at the other side of the bridge I saw an old locomotive. This was what the first lady was talking about, hahaha. Colombia has a good bus transport. Every city has big and organized terminals and Cali wasn't the exception. Now, go under a tunner and we were there! It was easy to find the buses. I asked someone where I could find the buses to the Hacienda or Buga - closest big town and they told me to go to the 2nd level.
There were a lot of guys "promoting" the different buses to different destinations. Everyone was asking where I was going. I said I wanted to go to la Hacienda Paraiso and another guy showed up who said they were going there, so he led us to the bus and asked us to wait there. In a few minutes the bus would departure, sweet! Can't wait to leave the city and see the beautiful landscapes in the valley :)
Bus looked nice and comfy, furthermore they said they'd go straight, sweet! But it was too good to be true, hahaha. They didn't wait until the bus was full to leave, but they did stop a couple of times before leaving the city in order to get more passengers. Oh well, that gave me opportunity to see how Cali surroundings looked like. One thing that caught my attention was a street vendor selling things looking like sleeves. What was that? Yes, they were sleeves, but without anything in the middle? Well, it's so hot in Cali that drivers usually have an arm out of the window, so they wear a "sleave" in order not to get a sun burn, hahaha. Finally bus was full and we'd drive straight to La Hacienda, well the bus stop near it :)

Nice hostel but no comfy beds - Casa Blanca Hostel
I was looking for a place to stay near the party area of the city: 6th Ave. Browsing on internet I found this place located in the north of the city, which looked nice.
I sent them an email, but they told me I had to book it through hostelworld, pffff. Nevermind. When we arrived there was a girl at the frontdesk, who was just helping. She couldn't find the reservation and assumed one of the available bedrooms was the one booked, hahaha. So good she picked the right one, hahaha.
The location is very good, just one block away from the busy and party 6th. Ave, but it doesn't get too loud here. It's also walking distance from the Bus Terminal. This place is a house that was turned into a hostel, therefore there are not many rooms. Place was very clean and it felt very safe.
I was expecting to have a private bathroom, but there weren't private bathrooms... Ok, I can deal with that. The weakness here is the bed. It's HARD! Eventhough stayed here 2 nights, my poor back...
The shower is a electric one and if you want to have hot water, have to open the tab full wait a bit and close it 1/2 way, so you'd have hot water. I learned it too late...
There's a common area with a nice tv, couches and there's free wi-fi too. There's a computer too, but you have to pay for it. They also organize tours.
You have to pay a deposit for the key and would get it back when you return it. They don't serve breakfast, but there's a tasty bakery 1 block away :P
I don't know if the dorms have better beds, maybe... the only disadvantage here are the beds, the rest is fine.

Tasty bakery with great breakfasts in Cali - Kuty
Kuty is a chain of bakeries in Colombia, with 4 locations in Cali. It was very convenient located, just 1 block away from the hostel.
It was early and the place was already crowded, a good sign! There were lines inside for buying bread and other things, and the outdoor tables were most of them full too. It's a popular spot for having breakfast among the locals.
The menu is mostly about breakfast, but you can find different types od sandwiches, bread, pastries, omelettes, coffee, juices, desserts, etc. They also offer combinations, including a healthy one. I saw a Colombian sort of yogurt called "Kumys", similar to the natural yogurt.
Portions are good size and prices are not high. I didn't want the healthy combination and just got a fruit salad, very good one and a tasty juice. Besides the healthy salad, I tried an arepa with egg.
Arepas can be found almost everywhere, but this one was the best I've tried. So tasty! Yolk was still liquid inside and arepa was warm...
If you can't decide after looking at the menu, you can go inside and watch the products and the kitchen area.
I highly recommend you to go to any of the locations of this chain to have either a yummy breakfast or snack.
Ask for the arepa de huevo (with egg). I'm craving for it :P

Bus terminal in Cali - Colombia
Driving a bus is the cheapest but comfortable way to transport in Colombia. And Cali is not a exception.
The terminal is located north of the city, near Urb. Sta. Monica area. The building has 3 levels where you can find different bus companies driving to all the country, but this is not the only thing you can find here.
Cali's terminal is big. It's not brad new or very modern, but is well maintained and kept clean. Since there are many people driving buses, it's not a surprise that you'll find several cafeterias, food stores, a supermarket, internet cafes, exchange houses, a casino and gift shops for sweets and souvenirs.
There's a tunnel connecting it with the main street. At the terminal you can watch many local people and taste local yummy snacks. I even bought some for home, hehehe. The terminal is well organized and with security. But always keep an eye on your belongings.
