On our way to the beautiful Chania
This day we were planning to go to Chania. People said it is a very beautiful place, so we wanted this to see ourselves. And it is true, Chania is beautiful.
In the morning we took the bus again to Heraklion, and there we had to take the bus to Chania. During this route you follow the whole coastline and sometimes the inlands. The landscape is really special to see. I am amazed that people trust themselves to build houses on that slippery rocks. The rocks are all layers of stone. Not massive at all. You can see that by all the stones which fall down. After a heavy shower, the road is covered with stones. But ok, it is not my house. When you go to Chania you will also pass Rethimnon. This city is known for its universities. And Rethimnon is a bit similar than Chania, but even more touristic and smaller. So if you had to choose where to go, than choose Chania.
Because of the time this trip would take, we decided to take a hotel in the centre of Chania. By bus this route from Malia to Chania will take about 4 hours. This is too far to do it in one day. We found an hotel next to the busstation which was cheap, not the best hotel, but good enough for just one night.
Starting to walk we saw that Ghania in the centre is really Venitian. But you also can see influences of Turkey. There are a lot of nice small streets with bars, shops, art and local products. The centre of this town is closed for cars, so that is very nice. In the middle you will find a square which has a lot of terraces you can relax and have something to drink or eat. Of course at the moment we wanted to leave, a heavy storm passed by! So waiting again. After the heavy storm the sky went clearer and we enjoyed walking and exploring the surrounding. Very late at night we went back to our hotel room. In the morning having a nice breakfast, we wanted to see some more of Chania. But first I had to have a latte macchiato to fulfill my coffee addiction. I therefore visited Starbucks. At about 10.00 hour we took the bus to Heraklion again. You know we are tourists, and I really cannot read the old greek alphabet, so we took the wrong bus company. How could we know? I thought this was the same bus company as the one we took towards Chania. No there is another one. We did not take the Minoan line, but another one! Tourist only look in front of the bus if it is the right number and heading to the right places. Therefore we had to change bus in Rehimnon. (we had to buy a new ticket). This system of travelling is very strange, we asked which bus we had to take. The pointed at the back of the bus station, but could not tell us which bus to take. Finally we saw another bus coming in, it had Heraklion in front of the bus and it was Minoan line. That had to be the right one! Lucky it was. Because of the nice weather we hopped of the bus in Heraklion to walk a bit around the harbor and drink a cup of coffee.
