I like it here. We’re right on the river in a nice small resort. I say resort but don’t get excited, this place ain’t fancy! We are right on the water though. I have a cabin that backs right onto the river. Its very sweet. Tidy. Clean. Era is likely 1950 but whatever! Had a nice lunch. Definitely enjoyed the food in Semporna, Sandakan and here (Sukau) more than anything else I’ve had in Borneo. I remember in Semporna that it was the first time I felt full.
Just took a walk around the resort.
There is couple here that did the Turtle Island tour from Sandakan. The tour is pretty pricey, taking you to an island where sea turtles lay their eggs (turtles literally are laying eggs there every day!). I was thinking of doing it but decided not to after I saw all the turtles while diving. I saw, on average, 5 turtles per dive, so I didn’t feel the need to go to Turtle Island. I definitely made the right decision to not go. Apparently only 2 turtles came to lay eggs while they were there and they said there were so many tourists there it was difficult to see and enjoy the sightings.
Went on an afternoon river tour and it was awesome! Saw lots of Probiscus monkeys, Long tail Macaques, Pig tail Macaques, 2 monitor lizards (one over a metre long, yow!), 2 vipers (!!!), a beautiful kingfisher bird, and had 4 sitings of the hornbills.
The river tour the next day was definitely different. It poured rain the entire time. So much for seeing any animals! They’re all hiding from the rain! The group the day before saw pigmy elephants and wild orangutans. We took a jungle walk. All we saw was lots of leeches (yak!), elephant poop and our muddy feet! On the way back to the resort we did see egrets, purple herons, hornbills, a fish eagle, and more Probiscus and long tail Macaque monkeys. Not bad in the end.
Back to Sandakan I go. Stayed at the same hotel, I mean why change a good thing! Spent the evening getting my stuff organized for Indonesia and making phone calls on Skype. Man I love Skype, its so easy to connect with family at home.
I miss my diving friends from Semporna. Man we had a good time together. But everyone has moved on, to home, new travel spots. So no sense missing them I suppose. I’m ready to get to Bali. Plan to spend a few days there just not really sure what I’m going to do actually! I’ve decided to start off in Kuta. I’ve booked my flight and have a hostel to stay in for a couple nights. Word is Kuta is very touristy and a perfect place to party for couple days. I like a good party!
