I ran into Marcel and Hans, my lovely boys from KK and Mulu, while diving in Semporna. What a surprise that they were diving with the same shop as me! We hung out and I discovered a couple days ago that they were heading to a river tour near Sandakan on the 15th. I decided to go with them on the public bus, it left at 7:30am, and would drop us off in some random part of the highway called the junction. Then it was our best guess how we were to find our way to the river tour company. We had a vague map, no worries. Ha! When we get the bus tickets they tell us that they’re dropping us off at check point whatever that means. We push that we need to go to the junction. No luck. O.
Public transit is awesome. People of every kind are here, travelling to unknown destinations. Love seeing the countryside and more of rural Malaysia. Hans reviews his map. We’ve definitely passed the junction. 30 mins later the bus stops and kicks us out at check point. Right. We are in the middle of no where, beside a random street market and WAY past where we want to be. Our bags are on the dirt street. Its blazing hot. Marcel says first we smoke, then we figure out what we do Love it! So they smoke cigarettes and my body smokes from the heat of this oven hot country! We ask lots of locals questions and decide its best to take a public bus to Sandakan, stay the night, sort out how to get to the river tour from there. O.k. Good idea. We get on the bus. Its 4 malaysian dollars (about $1 Cdn). We wait. Apparently the bus only goes when its full. Oh man, we could be here all day! There are no backs on some of the seats. I pull out my clock which has a temperature gauge on it, why didn’t I think of this sooner! Its 35 degrees in the bus, with the windows down. Awesome.
