From Mysore we set off with Simon again to Ooty. We were to encounter our first taste of India's mountainous roads. Think of being on a continous roller coaster for 6 hours - one that goes up and down and sideways.........think continous switchbacks, think poor pavement and roads that are really only wide enough for 1 1/2 cars. Think of vehicles trying to pass you and you trying to pass them. It is total caos - but it seems to work. The continous sound of the driver and other drivers beeping their horns adds to the scene.
We arrived in Ooty and were to go up to a mountainous lookout (some claim to be the highest in Southern India at nearly 8 thousand feet - but other claim it is the second highest) - in anycase we were not wanting to go any further that day in the car. As Simon had to return to Bangalore that night - ...........he would have to drive all night in order to reach there by morning for a commitment he had to keep), we opted to have a late lunch in our hotel and send him on his way. As the we were in the centre of town we ventured out after lunch and had a great time.....shopping.....what else!! Night gowns in beautiful good quality cotton for $3.50CDN.....how can you pass a bargain like that.
