Shoreline in the Miraflores area of Lima.

I flew into Lima today and was amazed by the number of McDonald´s, KFC´s and other American restaurants.  I went to what I belive is Lima´s most modern mall which had a Hooter´s, Nike sports store and all the trappings of America at American Prices.  I was excited to use a bathroom that was not only free, but also had toilet paper, toilet seats and was clean.

Some details about Cuzco where I spent the previous two and a half weeks that I may have left out include the fact that there is not a single McDonalds in the city of about 400,000 people.  The only American restaurant is apparently a Subway that I never saw and the Peruvians said is too expensive.  In addition, you had to pay for all bathrooms and provide your own paper.

No paper was suppose to go in the toilet, instead you were suppose to put it in a small garbage can next to the toilet.  It is great to be in a city where paper can go in the toilet now, but I am sure it will not last long.

I believe Lima has more than a quarter of Peru´s population and I am here on the end of their three day National holiday celbration.  The Miraflores area where my hostal was is in a pretty nice part of town and remind me of a trendy European city.  The rest of the city that I saw was mostly disappointing.  There was a nice outdoor mall near the center of the city that was packed with people doing shopping on the holiday weekend and where I bought some shoes. That is all I have to say exciting about Lima right now...but hopefully I will have a few hours here before I fly out on Saturday.
