Enoteca, Castello Banfi Winery (Castello di Poggio alle Mura) on the way to Montepulciano

Jenny and I joined a group of 45 people from work on their second Wine Tasting Excursion--this time to Tuscany! We visited 4 wineries, bought 37 bottles of wine, 2 cheeses and had a fantastic time! We also had great food, rainbows, and historic scenery.

Enoteca, Castello Banfi Winery (Castello di Poggio alle Mura) on the way to Montepulciano

We drove through northern Tuscany where the rollong hills turned into Mediterranean mountains, with a climate change more condusive to growing Chianti and Chianti Classico wines.  We stopped at the huge castle vineyard and olive groves of CASTELLO BANFI, one of the largest wineries in the Tuscany Region for lunch and wine shopping.  Then it was off to enchanting walled mountain-topped city of Montepulciano for another winery tour and dinner with 5 kinds of ***CHEESE*** for desert.

Older hotel in historic Montepulciano, Tuscany, Italy
The Hotel Albergo II Marzocco inside the old city wall shopping area of historic Montepulciano is run by Catholic nuns and was very convienent to the local shops/bars/restaurants. The rooms were fine in size, except they had the smallest showers I've ever seen and the beds were like laying on carboard. The view from our corner room was fantastic and the breakfast buffet was adequate--except they had 5 different kinds of juice but none of them were orange (peach, pineapple, pear, grapfruit and cranberry). I did not like giving up my passport to check in, but apparently this was a standard way to improve efficiency in the region for large group arrivals. Great location to stumble back to after hitting the local bar scene, although it does not have an elevator so be careful on the narrow marble staircases. the morning view of the fog below the hill-top city was amazing and the cathedral is just a block away from the hotel, which is adjacent to the gendamarie police station--very safe.
