What a day!!!!!!!!!!!!.
Well we finally set off for Franz Josef which we knew would be a long drive. The rain kept getting harder which made the scenery good. The water cascading down the side of the mountain and across the road. All we could do was keep driving till it was time to stop for lunch. Then we thought that we would have another 2 and half hour drive to Franz Josef so we just kept driving in the rain. There was a lot more water lying across the road. About 2 hours along we had to stop in a long queue of cars. Waiting, waiting waiting. The road was flooded, then they were only letting 4 wheel drives through as there was a blocked drain that workmen were trying to clear.
We decided to wait. 2 and half hours and we got through. The road was a mess!!! The pressure of the water had ripped up the road. We arrived at Franz Josef a lot later than planned. I had hoped that we would get there early enough to go for a walk to the glacier but no such luck. It was dinner time and again Frank had had enough and went to bed while Andrew, May and I walked to the main street and had dinner in one of the restaurants before heading back to the unit for the night.
When we checked into the unit which I had booked months ago, there was a couple with children looking for accomodation. They had been stuck in the same queue as we had but might have waited a lot longer than us as they were ahead of us. Everything in town was booked out. So I am not sure where they stayed. They were sent to a place just out of town so they might have ended up there.
