I recently had the great pleasure of taking a 2 week business trip to central Italy. Here is my story...

First Days in Avezzano

The company I work for has a manufacturing plant in Avezzano Italy.  We frequently send people there to work on projects with that facility, and this time it was my turn to go (along with about 12 others).  After a very long plane trip (Boise to Chicago to Frankfurt to Rome), we rented cars in Rome and drove about 60 miles east into the central mountains to Avezzano.  We didn't accomplish much the rest of that day, except for having an incredible dinner at Fanta Rio near Alba Fucens.  Outstanding.

The next morning was Sunday, so we had the day to explore the central Abruzzo region.   Apparently, the whole valley we were in had originally been a large lake.  The Romans had drained the lake back in ancient times using tunnels they dug straight through the mountians to a valley on the other side.  The next few photos show the ruins of the tunnels which are still intact.
