The Castle in Celano

The same first afternoon, we had a quick lunch at a sidewalk pizza restaurant in Celano and then proceeded to tour the fortress castle.    Apparently there has been a castle on this site since the time of the Romans, however, this particular castle was built in the middle ages.   The castle sits in the middle of the town of Celano on the side of a shear cliff.  Spectacular views abound in all directions.

The castle is surrounded by a large wall, which you can climb and walk around.   Every so often, there are small rooms with holes where arrows could be shot at invaders outside the wall.  It even has a draw bridge at the main entrance.

The castle also contains a great museum with works of art, ancient clothing, artifacts, and writings of the area.  There are also many interesting photographs from the area including some information about the draining of the lake by the Romans.
