Alba Fucens
December 10, 2006
After seeing the tunnels, we drove to the other side of the valley to the ancient Roman site of Alba Fucens. There was a very old church and a large archeological site including ruins of a Roman settlement and an arena.
The layout of the ruins is fairly well intact and archeological digs are visibly still being worked on in the area. Large columns still line some of the walkways, and in many of the "rooms", you can brush away some of the soil to reveal intricate tile floors. I included a photo of one of these areas.
Alba Fucens sits atop a hill at the base of some large mountains. The hill guards the entrance to the valley and provides a nice view both ways. Apparently the Romans thought so, and that is why they built this settlement.
