Outside the town I got to see a different side of China and was able to cycle across small rural farms and visit small market towns. Here you see the poorer side of China, with people surviving on subsistence farming, with small fields and one or two cows that they can get milk from.
While in Yangshuo, someone suggested we view the local “Light Show”. It was presented as a show, near the river with traditional Chinese performances, while the Karst Peaks in the background were lit up with spotlights. We went along for a look.........Unbelievable......We arrived at a large outdoor theatre, right on the river with room for maybe two thousand people. The show started and before we knew it there were performers coming from everywhere! - down the banks of the river, coming up the river on boats and coming out from behind the seating area…… In all there were 500 performers involved in the show. We soon learnt that the show was directed by Zang Yimou who directed the opening ceremony of the Olympics. Very impressive! What was really surprising was that to the locals, a show of this magnitude just didn't seem a big deal - they just told us there was a light show at night - if you're not doing anything else, try it out!
Ok - on from Yangshuo and into the heart of china and onto the metropolis of Chongqing....
