People I met during my trip suggested that Shanghai was mediocre to visit. I’d have to agree. The much famed “Bund Area”, once the "Wall Street of China" is essentially a construction site right now, with preparations under way for the World Expo 2010, when 70 million visitors are expected in the city. Still I spent a few days, visited the shopping area - West Nanjing Road and of course Padong. This is Shanghai’s (and China’s) current financial centre where the Oriental Pearl Tower sits along with glistening new sky scrapers. They just completed China's tallest building - Shanghai World Financial Center at 492m (3rd tallest in the World). As I’ve seen in other parts of Urban China, plenty of construction and new sky scrapers going up as we speak.
It was in Shanghai I got a trip on the Maglev train - the world's first commercially operating train with this technology. It covers the 18 mile route from Shangai to the airport in under 8mins, reaching a top speed of 431KM/hr (286mph).
Ok, next to Beijing where of course, mores surprises are in store....
