Next...out of the city and onto the Mekong River Delta for a few days. The Mekong Delta is that area where the Mekong river splits into nine distributaries before emptying into the South China sea. This area covers 39,000 Sq Km (about half the size of Ireland) and has a population of about 17 million. This is a fascinating area to visit. Life revolves around the river - The river is the main mode of transport for everyone, from women rowing small boats to the local market (floating markets) to large sand barges and logging boats. They essentially do all that we do, but they do it on the river.

The main industry in the area is rice production and this was featured extensively in our tour. We visited rice fields, a rice mill, a traditional rice noodle factory, a rice paper factory and of course everything we ate was accompanied by as much rice as we could ever need.
Step 1 in making Coconut Candy
We saw traditional coconut candy being made and washed it down with Vietnamese "Rice Wine". This "rocket fuel" has 40% alcohol and is kept in a bottle with a snake, a locust and other such creatures (See Picture Below).

Spending 2 days on the river we saw too many things to cover in this blog. The river is used for everything.....people wash themselves, their food, they go for a swim, they fish, wash their clothes and no doubt go to the toilet in the river also. Its just constant activity with people laughing & joking, wheeling and dealing, trading and going about their daily lives, always in a good mood and with a smile on their face.

We visited a few floating markets where people come to purchase their fruit, vegetables and other supplies for the week. Definitely the best part of the trip so far - I'd highly recommend a visit.
