Traffic in Ho Chi Minh City
Next Stop - Ho Chim Minh City, Vietnam - I got a morning bus from Phnom Penh, crossed the border and arrived into Ho Chi Minh City in the early afternoon - Oh Lord!  I thought Bangkok / Phnom Penh had traffic issues - Ho Chi Minh takes it to another level entirely.  Thousands and thousands of bikes, cars, pedestrians fighting for every bit of space they can find. Everyone remains cool and calm though and typically arrive at their destination unharmed.  Ho Chi Minh is very developed, particularly compared with Siem Reap / Phnom Penh.  I took a tour to the Cu Chi tunnels about 2 hours outside the city centre.  This tunnel complex was used by the Viet Cong during the war and consists of approx 75 miles of tunnels with living areas, storage facilities, medical treatment areas and of course booby traps and secret exits and entrances.

Their view of the war is very different to that portrayed in the western world and they are very proud and enthusiastic to tell their story.  Our guide made the tour more interesting as he gave us an embelished history of his own life and the many epic battles he fought.  It was difficult to follow the exact sequence of events but at one point he claimed to have been fighting in the US Navy with his commanding officer being none other than John Kerry......

I also visited Reunification Palace, headquarters of the South Vietnamese during the war and site of handover of power during the fall of Saigon in 1975. After Ho Chi Minh City, I headed out on the Mekong river for a few days....
