We have been pretty busy this week, but I like it. Though I loved Mendoza, I´m glad to get back into my routine. We had a midterm today, which I think went well, or at least well enough. OK, so today I think I´ll tell you a little about their taste in food here. First of all, though they have some grocery stores(which send the groceries to your house) they have a lot of specialty stores. They have the panaderia(bakery), the carneceria(butcher), the fruteria(fruit and vegetable stand), the nutrition store, the dulceria(candy store-my fav), and so many more. They also LoVe dulce de leche. They serve it with bread at our residencia. It´s on almost every dessert. They have dulce de leche candy, spread, ice cream, and even milkshake(which I have yet to try). Buenos Aires is also known for its cafes. The cafes are typically on the corners. They have tostadas(tosted sandwhiches with thin bread), medialunas(sweet crossiants), and of course, cafe con leche. Also, it´s hard to find veggies here. Say what you want, but I´m not lying. They don´t typically serve veggies with your meal. Salads are quite interesting(a mix of cold peas and corn with a minute amount of iceberg lettuce, shredded carrots, beats, and cauliflower, with vinegar and oil dressing). Oh, they don´t have pepper out on the tables here either. I love their fruit at the fruit stands. I eat pears and oranges all the time. Also, they have small packages of candy at the kiosks around the city, like one piece of chocolate, or one piece of a carmel(dulce de leche of course). They have coca light here-beats diet coke anyday. They have a dessert drink called a submarino:you take a chocolate bar and put it in warm milk to make and ice cream sundae/chocolate milk drink. I haven´t tried that yet, but I promise I´ll get around to it. They LOVE their beef and meat here, too. You´d have trouble being vegetarian here! I can´t believe I almost left this out! They have yerba mate. It´s pretty much tea. You have a special cup and straw for it though. That´s a very social drink. They have their own liquor, fernet, which I have been told takes 5 tries til you like it. I tried it once; it was nasty; I´m not trying it again. Their pizza here is good, though slightly lacking in the amount of tomato sauce(I told you they don´t like veggies). Overall, I like the food here. I find ways to eat veggies, and with all the fruit stands around, I get plenty of those. I love the breakfast at the residencia, and I can´t resist a good cheese tostada for lunch(though I have started packing my lunch). Plus, they have the most amazing cafe con leche!
Con besos, Jill
