Welcome!

My stepson’s return for the holidays presented my wife and I with a rare opportunity to get away by ourselves for a quick overnight.  Eric tended our daughter last night and we headed to Southport for some casual ‘stocking stuffer’ shopping, making a quick jaunt to Bald Head Island on the return.

We love island communities, but Bald Head is quite unlike the Maine variety we are most familiar with.  Up north these small enclaves are dominated by folks earning a hard living in the fishing industry.  It struck us that Bald Head residents are primarily upper class, either living here part time during warmer months or commuting daily to the mainland.

The harbor for Bald Head Island is but two miles from Southport, so access back-and-forth only requires a twenty minute ferry ride.

Our exploration was limited as we only had a few hours to devote, but this place has long been a potential vacation spot and we decided to at least get out for a brief reconnaissance mission (quite a few homes are offered for rental here and we have mulled over sharing one for a week with family and friends).  Bald Head is quite beautiful and we came away with heightened interest in camping out for a longer visit.  We basically walked around the harbor and down to Old Baldy, North Carolina’s oldest standing lighthouse.

Despite being disconnected from the mainland, Bald Head appears to feature every creature comfort, and we adored walking around – there are no vehicles permitted for residents (just a handful of municipal pick-ups and such for maintenance), so it’s pretty much a bunch of golf carts whizzing about the paved roads, but there are many plank walkways winding through the woods which are wonderful.  Hopefully we will get back out here for a longer stay next summer to provide some deeper details, but Bald Head Island certainly appeals as a place to check out.
