Since I haven't seen any ancient places during the last week we decided to have a sightseeing in Aptera which is located close to Chania. Our flight will be at 8.15 p.m. and there would be enough time to go there.
Aptera is a site in western Crete, a kilometer inland from the southern shore of Souda Bay , about 13 kilometers east of Chania.
But before we headed off to Aptera we packed our stuff, checked out and put all suitcases in our Peugeot 308. At Koraka Beach we stopped a last time to say bye bye to the Lybian Sea, then we stopped again at the Rodakino bridge aswell at Frangokastello and Imbros gorge where we took some photos again since we are hooked by its beauty.
Arriving at Aptera we were pleased that we didn't have to pay an entrance fee. The booth was empty and all gates open until 3 p.m.. So we entered the area. You have an amazing view from the hill down on Souda Bay and the surrounding. The excavation area is rambling and you need some time to see it all. About 700 m from Aptera you find an old turkish fortress which will be renovated as a hotel.
At 2 p.m. we had seen it all and decided to have lunch somewhere. We headed of to Souda where we found a taverna at the banks of the Souda Bay. The view was great but the meal awfull. It was a real tourist trap :( I forgot the name but I'll find it and will avoid it next time.
Still 2 hours until we had to go to the airport. The sun came out again and we decided to go to the beach for a last time.
At first we've been to the car rental parking place but nobody was there. We parked the car and went to the booth in the airport. A nice lady told us everything is ok and we gave her the keys. Then after changing clothes (it would be cold in Germany) we queued in line 7 to drop off our luggage. The greek staff worked very fast and within 10 minutes or so we could go to our gate. Boarding should be at 7.30 p. m. but nothing happend. Even at 8.15 (depature time) we were trapped at the gate. Finally at 8.45 p.m. the gate opened and everybody was in a hurry since we had to leave Chania within the next 30 minutes otherwise we had to wait there for hours. The airplane rolled at the runway although not everybody took place at his/her seats.
The flight went well and we alighted at Düsseldorf International Airport at 10.55 p.m., 5 minutes later we couldn't have landed anymore due to the night-flight forbiddance. It took us about 1 1/2 hours to get our luggage and we were really pissed off. We were tired and wanted to go to our hotel to hit the sack. Usually we go by public transport but since it was so late we entered a taxi (way too expensive) which drove us to Hotel Ufer in downtown Düsseldorf. After checking in we felt in our beds and slept immediately.
