After breakfast we had a look on the beaches around. The next beach is only 50 m away from the hotel. It's not very wide but sandy and clean. About 15 minutes by feet you find a larger one - Koraka Beach. It's sandy, too but with little pebbles at the tide zone. Usually we wanted to spend the day on the beach but due to the heavy wind we decided to drive to Frangokastello and Chóra Sfakion for some sightseeing.
Frangokastello - only 15 km west from Rodakino - is the location of an old venetian castle built in 1371-74. The castle has a simple rectangular shape, with a tower at each corner and the remains of a Venetian coat of arms above the main gate.
The village of Frangokastello isn't very impressive, just a few taverns, small hotels, 2 mini markets and a service-station therefore, and due to the fact that is started raining!!!, we headed forward to Chóra Sfakion (27 km west of Rodakino).
The main problem in Chóra Sfakion was to find a parking place. The little village was very crowded by tourits - to be honest no idea why. By accident we found one. Then, when we wanted to get out of the car, a cloudburst took place and for at least 15 minutes we were trapped in the car. We didn't had rain coats with us. The last thing I expected in Greece was rain - eek!!
After a while the rain decreased and we decided to explore the village.
Due to the fact that the south western part of Crete is very mountainous and the streets are narrow and with thousands of serpentines we needed 1 hour (for 35 km) to get back to the hotel.
The dinner at a tiny tavern next to the hotel was a surprise. It was absolutely stunning. Instead of choosing from a menu the waitress told us what's available. We choose: stuffed (with rice) courgette leaves (I never ate something better), greek salad, tzaziki, lamb with potatoes, pork souvlaki with fried potatoes, homemade cake as a desert, red wine and beer. Soooo yummy!!!!!!!
