Statues of Pompeii (Weeping Angels? Don't Blink! Ha Ha - Dr. Who humor...)

From my journal, when I kept one back in the day:

"Toured the ruins of Pompeii today. It is a magnificient place. I spent about 6 hours there just wandering around. I have been in Naples without luggage for 2 days, but am told it will arrive tonight at midnight. Molto Bene! I stay at Hotel paradiso on Via Catullo. What a splendid view of the bay of Naples from here. The hotel is on a hillside overlooking the bay with Vesuvius looming in the background. Reaching Pompeii was an adventure in itself from here. Take the Funicolare (a large cable car that runs under the hillside to the bay) from San Gioacchino to Mergellina station. Take the Metro from Mergellina to Piazza Garibaldi, then the Circumvesuvia train to Pompeii.

Once you get used to it, navigating in Naples is easy enough, but it's a noisey, swarming place. I didn't care for the city much. The Bay area is nice, but the rest of it, or what I saw of it was a mess of noise and confusion. Seeing Pompeii was well worth the stay, however."

I wish I could have seen Herculaneum too, but Pompeii itself is a full day really. The intact nature of Pompeii really gives one a sense of how Romans lived, being a city mostly preserved after being buried by the Vocanic eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Fascinating place to explore.

Next on my journey is Erice, Sicily for the next two weeks to attend the School of Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy - Course on Advances in Energy Transfer. It would be a time of meeting new friends, but also experiencing a loss there and being present at the death of the Scientific Secretary of the Ettore Majorana Centre, Dr. Alberto Gabriele. The next entry will be a difficult one for me to write. It's not something I dwell on, but something that has stayed with me all these years since then.
