View of Monte Cofano from Erice

I returned to Erice again, this time with my brother Jerry (travelsnobb) and his wife at the time, Melinda, as company. I know the city very well, having been there many times before, so maybe having my brother there was like Luke Skywalker going to Dagobah to seek Yoda. In this case, it was "Ohhh... Erice Master! Bruno. You seek Bruno!" That is who I become while in Erice, and Bruno knows the streets, the sights to see, and the hidden paths in Erice. He knows the places that are strong with the Force. So it was I felt a great pleasure to show my brother and his wife around Erice. I introduced them to places the ordinary tourist wouldn't know about or have access in experience and they enjoyed it I think. We spent a couple/few days together in Erice, and took a day trip to the beach at San Vito Lo Capo in extended travel too.

Bruno - Edge of the world
I was pleased as well to introduce them to my professor and thesis advisor from Boston College too, Baldassare (Rino) Di Bartolo (the director of the Erice School of Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy, which I was attending), and his staff Ottavio Forte and Xuesheng Chen. We had a nice dinner together one evening and this was a real treat for me to share this kind of experience. Rino had always been sort of a father figure for me and to have him meet my brother was special. Rino is responsible for giving me the opportunity to have the career I have at NASA. I had him for a course in Electromagnetic Theory in graduate school at Boston College, then assisted him on a solutions manual for a textbook he was writing. He had a grant at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, which provived for a graduate student, and offered me an open position. The rest is history and I have been here ever since, and eventually became a permanent NASA civil servant after my PhD degree.
Jerry - Edge of the world
It was a real joy to share this Erice experience with my brother, and Rino let us stay in the family home while visiting too, so we had our own home during the stay, so to speak. I wish my brother and his wife could have stayed the whole time I was there, but they had to move on, and I had to get on with the business of the science in the school that year. The rest is just scientific meetings, with an excursion and some gatherings for dinner and discussion, but my brother's visit to Erice is something I will always cherish that year. I am so grateful we got to share Erice in 2004 together - it's one for the history books in memory! Here's a tribute to my brother (and I'm sure he feels the same way towards me):

In song by Neil Diamond (1970) - He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother

The road is long
With many a winding turn
That leads us to who knows where
Who knows where

But I'm strong
Strong enough to carry him
He ain't heavy, he's my brother

So on we go
His welfare is of my concern
No burden is he, to bear
We'll get there
For I know
He would not encumber me
He ain't heavy, he's my brother

If I'm laden at all
I'm laden with sadness
That everyone's heart
Isn't filled with the gladness
Of love for one another

It's a long, long road
From which there is no return
While we're on our way to there
Why not share

And the load
Doesn't weigh me down at all
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
He ain't heavy, he's my brother.

We did, and glad I could share it with my brother that year! Thanks for the compliments on the photos. Not bad in quality for scans of prints. I didn't get a digital camera until 2005. Those photos of Erice (which I will post with those entries) are spectacular.
