I returned to Erice again in 2002 to attended the School of Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy - Status and Prospects of Luminescence Research. I gave a talk on a laser device we developed at NASA that operated on two wavelengths and had promising applications in the field of dentistry. It caused quite a buzz in the media at the time. Here is a link to a BBC story about the technology and you can also link to an article I wrote on the topic in the Journal of Applied Physics: Dual Wavelength Laser. It was a good meeting and, of course, always a pleasure to return to Erice. Just as a personal reflection, it was a bit of a strange feeling returning here after a three year absence in recalling the death of Dr. Gabrielle from a sudden heart attack on that previous visit here, an experience I detailed in my Erice 1999 journal entry. My plans for after the meeting were to go to the north of Italy and meet with a friend, but he had a change of plans and left for Romania with his girlfriend to visit her family before I arrived. So, I would wind up just using the time to go where I wished - no plans, no reservations, just traveling where I felt to go at any time. I detail these travels in the next few entries where I visited Verona, Padua, Milan, Finale Ligure & Nice.
