The Family - My Dad and Mom, big brother at left and me at right.

So it was in 1995 that I prepared for my first international travel experience. I had lived what you might call a rather prosaic life until this time. I grew up in the suburbs of Boston until I was six years of age, a descendant of Irish immigrants going back just a couple of generations. Our family, including my parents, my brother (two years older than me) and myself, moved to New Hampshire when I was just a little more than school age. This was the countryside back then and a far cry from the city life I had known thus far in my life. I adjusted to it and came to appreciate it as well. I returned to the city in my college years and on looking back now I am grateful to have had some experience of city life and country life in growing up into my 20's. In all that time, however, I had never ventured far from New England.

Around 1977 I made a journey to Utica, NY and in 1980 a journey to St. Petersberg, FL. I spent a brief time living in South Carolina in 1986 and had another trip to Florida that year, but the eastern seaboard of the United States from Maine to Florida was very much the extent of my travels, besides a journey to Montreal around 1984 as well, a trip I must write about one day too.

I tell this story of my early life because it is important in the framework of the story I will tell here of my Italian adventures. I am an American, but Irish in heritage, so having an international perspective was always something that intrigued me - I wanted to see foreign lands for myself, not just for the adventure but to connect with my heritage in some way too. I wanted to expand my horizons, so to speak, and while my destination was Italy in 1995 I saw it as an opportunity to grow as a person and see myself in different ways.

Italy has become special to me over the years and I hope I can share this journey in sequence as I experienced it over a decade or so and hope to continue to share beyond today in my future travels. It is my L'Avventura Dell Italia (The Adventure of Italy).

I have been to a good number of the major Italian cities to date including Rome, Florence, Venice, Naples, Milan, Padua, Verona and Palermo covering nine trips to Italy from 1995 to 2007. Some additional places like Finale Ligure and Pompeii will also be covered. I've seen quite a good amount of the Western part of Sicily as well in that time. Here is the timeline of my travels in Italy over the years I plan to cover:
