My first trip to Bahamas and I loved it!! I don't consider myself a "beach person" so I was a little skeptical about a Caribbean trip, but I had a great time! Stayed at the Atlantis on Paradise Island ... I don't think it is possible to have a bad time here! This resort is HUGE! We were there the last week in September which they say has only a 20% occupancy rate. Some of the hotels were closed. We stayed at the Coral Tower and spent some time at the Royal Tower also. Went into downtown Nassau on a few occasions. Opted to take the water taxi over which is a short walk from the Coral Towers and only cost $3 per person. Downtown was nice, good shopping .... packed when there are cruise ships docked so it was crowded when we were there. They have a big open market which they call the "Straw Market", not really my cup of tea. If you visit 5 stalls you will probably see everything being sold in there. Towels, t-shirts, handbags .... lots of junk. Very aggressive "sales people", harmless, but aggressive. I didn't last long in there. I expected Nassau to be a lot like Jamaica but I was wrong. A lot more impoverished areas in Jamaica and no real "downtown" area. In Jamaica you should just stay at your resort. In Nassau I think the trip downtown is definitely worth it.
