If you want to get to Kourou, learn how to pronounce it in French or at least bring a pen and piece of paper with you. It took us quite some time to explain where we want to go.
Anyway, after 2 hours driving from Cayenne, we arrived there around 11AM and took off at the harbor still hoping we can catch some boat to Iles du Salut. Unfortunately, the only boat left at 8AM so we had to wait until next day.
With no hotel reservation we started to look for something near by. First one we tried looked empty, but the hotel lady did not understand any English so she rather sent us away...
We walked to the 'center' hoping we can find some tourist information office.
We found some travel agency with very nice girl and she helped us to find a room. She also put us on a waiting list for the visit of Kourou Space Center.
The hotel was quite a walk from downtown, but we were happy we have found something - the town looked very sleepy, no hotel signs, no taxis. The hotel was close to the beach from where we could actually see Iles du Salut in distance. Water was totally muddy, looked bit scary.
We ordered taxi to come for us at a precise time (so we can catch the Space Center tour). It was 10 minutes later and it still did not show up, but the lady that owns the hotel was so nice she took us there. She did not accept any money for it.
The tour to the launch site has a limited number of seats, so it is advised to book in advance. We underestimated that and because everyone showed up, we did not get into the bus. So we checked the museum and some exhibitions outside, took a picture of Slovak flag :) and ordered taxi back to town. It was supposed to come in 10 minutes, but it was still not there after 1,5 h of waiting and several phone calls to the taxi service (it's about 10 km from Kourou). When it arrived, the driver was arrogant lazy big local boss type. Ruined my day completely. Because we were totally hungry, we asked him to take us to some restaurant. But he forgot to tell us that all restaurants in Kourou open at 6PM. So another hour of waiting with empty stomach.
Well, at least the Chinese restaurant was good, and after couple of beers we forgot how bad the day was.
