Love and affection are nothing to be ashamed about. So why does the sight of Argentine couples
making out inspire me to nudge my buddies and mutter something like, “PDA!” or “Get
a room!”
Even with growing openness to sensuality and affection in
American entertainment and media, we Americans are still reluctant to fully
embrace such sights and see them as normal.
Centuries long prudishness has been slow in passing from the popular
mindset. There’s no doubt about it,
couples kissing in public parks inspire smart comments and little jokes among
our group. And we were quite shocked
when we first saw the plethora of lingerie stores with big advertisements of
underwear-clad women all over the streets of Buenos Aires.
Local Argentines, however, don’t even bat an eye in passing
these advertisements, and shamelessly participate in such public displays of
affection. Although the flavor of the
jokes has worn thin, I still can’t help but chuckle inside whenever I see either
and shake my head in amazement, and, perhaps, disgust?
But hold on a second.
Perhaps I’m the one who needs to change my perspective. Why should anyone be ashamed of expressing
their love, or at least incest? Why
should anyone be uncomfortable with such revealing advertisements? In fact, being more comfortable with public
displays of affection more than likely promotes more comfort between the two
lovers, and, ultimately, a healthier relationship. Too many American relationships suffer because
one or both of the participants are too “cold” and uncomfortable with affection
and sexuality. I think America can use
a lesson in the open sensuality and affection shown in Argentine society.
