Lanzarote - Canary Islands. Land of the long donkey dong
December 10, 2000
After we finished Uni, like most aussies, a group of mates and I decided to do a trip around the world.
My trip started in the Canary islands on the island of Lanzarote.
The Canary islands are renowned for their good surf and beaches. I didnt really know anything else about the place.
Did you know that the name of the islands has nothing to do with the Canary bird?
And it infact has everything to do with the native dogs on the island. Canary being an extention of the word 'canine' in fact.
What we also did know was that there were donkeys all around and they were extremely well endowed. It prompted my friend to write a beautiful song about the island to the tune of The Pianoman. I cant exactly remember the words now... so I suppose this comment is pointless but it i'll always remember the island as the land of the long donkey dong. ...
We surfed everyday, checked out the volcano, caves and also hit the thumping club scene every night.
It was a very relaxing trip, dirt cheap, and lots of fun. The surf was good and the nite scene was great in that you get enitced into the bars and offered free drinks!
It's just a shame about all those fat, old, pink english and germans littered all over the beaches....
It was the first time i'd been in Europe, or on a land that didnt speak English. I was young, inexperienced, unworldy and also still recovering from a major operation. I learned a lot on this trip about the world and about myself and it pretty much set the scene for the travel bug that soon devoured my spirit.
