Houses along the shore at Bethany Beach

Friday morning. We'd been to the 2010 edition of Sunfest and now we had all day for more exploration along the Eastern Shore. I wanted to get up into Delaware and hoped we'd also have time to see the Maryland part of Assateague Island. First, it was off to breakfast at Dunkin' Donuts. (No complimentary breakfast at the Holiday Inn.) We had bagles and juice. I really like Dunkin's coffee, too!

We checked out of the Holiday Inn and headed up along  Philadelphia Ave./Coast Highway towards the Delaware state line. From 17th Street, at the Holiday Inn, all the way to 146th Street at the state line, Ocean City is a very developed resort city. All along the way are hotel, resorts and amusement areas. All that changes after the Delaware line. The development rapidly drops off as your enter Fenwick Island. The beachfront and most of the adjoining land is a state park.

There were several beach access areas as we continued north on Delaware Route 1. However, there is a $20 fee to enter the beach area. As we just wanted a look at the ocean and not stay for an extended time, it did not seen reasonable to pay to enter the state park. Instead, we arrived at the resort town of Bethany Beach. Bethany Beach is the first town encountered in Delaware. It's a small community, much quieter than Ocean City. In the season, it hosts families and couples who typically rent a beachfront house for a week. We did pull off here and walked out the public beach area. It was a nice midday and a few beachgoers where there. This part of the shore is replete with sand dunes, blown by the wind and storm action. (There is a lot of beach erosion, too, and the shore communities are constantly repairing them.)

From Bethany Beach, we continued our drive up the highways towards Dewey Beach. Just before Dewey Beach, we saw signs announcing the Indian River Life-Saving Station Musuem. Well, that sounded interesting, but it's for the next chapter!
