I know this is a shock for anyone who knows me, but I am planning something... a silk road trip. I don't have a time frame yet (next spring I hope) but looking for any feedback from anyone. Also would love to find a few places to stay and friendly faces along the way.

Azerbaijan

could possible take a ferry across the caspian sea from Turkmenistan...

If this is still going on, I'll be around Baku during this time. Let me know, we'll have a few drinks.

The ferry can also take days to get there. I have also heard ferries occasionally sink in the Caspian.

Also, it will be very difficult for you to get from Armenia into Azerbaijan by land with the border being closed. You will probably have to go back into Georgia and take the bus or train into Azerbaijan. I have been told the bus is much quicker. I do not even think there are flights between the two cities, but I could be wrong. Just giving you something to think about.

(this is for Baku -> Aktau, but I imagine Baku -> Turkmenistan is a similar story)
the ferry is very unpredictable - it goes when there is enough cargo, and if the weather is good. Getting tickets is a matter of hanging around by the port waiting for tickets to go on sale.
I was short of time so i flew, not as much fun but alot less hassle. Can sometimes work out cheaper. As a guide Baku - Aktau was about £75.
