Cannstatter Wasn (beer fest)

After living right by Stuttgart and its suburb Bad Cannstatt for almost 3 years I finally made it to the fest again. I had been here once before on a visit to Stuttgart many moons ago and always wanted to come back.
The Bad Cannstatter Wasn, beer fest and carnival, is in my opinion better than Oktoberfest, if you ignore the amounts of good beer at Oktoberfest. The fest here is smaller and more comfortable? Can’t quite describe the feeling I have when coming here. It feels like I’m back in my hometown attending a fest there (only that this one is bigger and better, but not as big as Oktoberfest). The fest has a good size and several beer tents with local brews being served.
We ate big Swabian hotdogs with German sausage in a round roll or Semmel. You can get the same thing with grilled steak. To freshen up with had a Radler, which is beer and lemonade (the German kind). Don’t knock it until you tried it. You’ll never taste something more refreshing. When it’s hot out it’s the safer choice than straight up beer. It might kick your butt, or maybe that’s just me. :p
The weather was beautiful and we had a little one with us. We were just here to walk through, maybe play some games and have some good food and drink. It being the last weekend of the fest the stands tend to want to get rid of some things. We walked by a donut stand and we were handed 10 euro worth of donuts for 2 Euros. YUMMY! That’s my kind of deal.
There’s a spring and summer fest here as well – same location. The fest is located between the Zoo (Wilhelma) and the Neckar Stadium. Parking is plentiful and close-by. If you plan on drinking take the S-Bahn which stops right by one of the entrances to the fest. The ATMs usually don’t work (or at least they never do when I use them) so get money out before you get here; you’ll need it! ;)
