I didn´t look this happy at the end of the flight, had a slight green tinge!

I actually don´t quite know where to begin.  Nazca is in the heart of the dessert in Peru, a pretty small town but home to the famous Nazca lines.  In order to properly see them you need to take a flight over the lines, so that´s what i did.  The plane itself holds 6 people including the pilot and was much like the plane i used to parachute jump, although there was no escaping the plane this time!  We flew over 14 of the most popular lines including the baby condor, condor, spider, whale and hummingbird.  The lines themselves are an enigma, no one really knows what they were created for.  They were discovered in the 1930´s when commerical flights started to take place over the valley.  The lines are a series of geometric shapes, lines, animal figures, plants and insects and no wonder the pilots reported seeing them, they´re huge!  They were created by removing the top layer of soil to rebeal the lighter sand below.

None are more than 1m deep and the lines are perfectly straight.  A German scientist called Anne Frichet gave her life to studying the lines and discovered that some of them corresponded to constellations that would have been in the sky around the time of the Nazca people.  Also some of them correspond to the summer and winter solstice path of the sun but it´s hard to say and i can imagine that there are many more years of study to go.  The plain on which the drawings were made is like a giant drawing board, flat and surrounded by mountains.  It´s just incredible to think that people were capable of these drawings.  Or if you prefer this theory more ... that ailens were!!!  Whatever the background they were truly fascinating.  My only problem was that by figure 12 i was so sick of being spun around the sky that i couldn´t look anymore!!!
