Dubrovnik... what a beautiful Coastal town!
October 8, 2009
Finally reached Dubrovnik at 6.30pm. The hostel was located on the hilly side overlooking the bay in Lapad suburb in the peninsula. There was no other guest as summer season just ended. The hostel owner had arranged me to stay at another double bed guesthouse with old lady owner to save his hostel running bills I presumed. I paid for 8 person dormitory but got double bed private room overlooking the bay. How sweet!
But somehow it’s a bit boring as no others to talk to apart from non-English speaking lady owner. The hostel owner tried to convince me to stay 2 nights there as the summer season reaching an end and they need income. I had booked an accommodation in Sarajevo for the next day so I didn’t want to cancel the booking. Through my past experience I always got pissed by this hostel chain as they charged me when I didn’t show up after the booking. Lesson learned well so I decided to leave Dubrovnik after only one night to Sarajevo. I wandered around town and Dubrovnik was really stunning during night. But the restaurants along the main pedestrian in Lapad area were too pricey.
After having my morning coffee overlooking the stunning view of the bay I took off and the lady owner tried again in convincing me to stay at her guesthouse if I’m coming back to Dubrovnik. I left the Suburb of Lapad to Dubrovnik Old Town. What a beautiful old town surrounded by fortress it was! And the weather was gorgeous; it’s very rare to have sunny blue sky like summer days in October from what the local has said.
Dubrovnik Old City is truly charming in par with Florence or Venice in my opinion albeit a bit smaller. I didn’t have any expectation how this town look like and it left me with a very good impression. Surrounded by Old City wall it is a gem of Adriatic coast. The only thing that put me off a bit was truck load of tourist everywhere in the old town. The usual sight with one tour leader and a bunch of old folk wearing floppy hats and double peace shots. Try to visualize that and time it 20 times more you’ll get the picture. The city itself practically surviving on the cruise liner tourist in which Dubrovnik is one of the popular stop along Mediterranean Cruise Liner stops. Couple more weeks the city will be silence and empty as the winter season kicks in.
I spent a good 2 hours in Dubrovnik Old town. I wish it could have been a lot longer as I really liked the town.
