who is coming???
Today was Shawn's birthday. He was glad spending that day in the coast. Usually my breakfast is just a glass of juice and a cup of coffee, but Roger loves to cook when he has guests and a huge omelettes with potatoes were waiting for us, hahaha.  Richard also came for breakfast, so Roger, Richard, Shawn and me shared a nice time and talked about what to do later.

We were going out when I saw it. There was a table before the entrance door of the building and Hazel wrote a signal saying: Happy Birthday, Shawn! So sweet!!! We were in Manta, so shrimps were a must! Last time in Manta we went to the fishmarket, just to watch, but this time we were looking for fresh products.
what did they do to him while he was sleeping?
We got calamaris, shrimps (medium sized and jumbo) and some tuna. Roger would use the new grill and will grill them and also veggies. Yesterday we bought veggies and skewers, yummy!

We went back home and were just chilling out there when we smelled something. Someone was baking. It was Hazel. She was baking a cake for Shawn, how sweet! Roger staid there, while Shawn and me went to the beach. He was the birthday boy, so he didn't have to cook or even help and me, well I was the foreign guest, hahaha, although everyone was foreign here... :P

It was about 1pm when we were at the beach. It was much nicer today, not windy at all. Perfect! Nevertheless, beach wasn't crowded. Roger was telling me yesterday, that the beach gets crowded just on weekends. The rest of the days it's almost empty, good for me! Shawn went for a swim, while I was taking pics and watching people.
the mango vendor...

Shawn came back and I have already seen a guy selling sliced mangos and would like to try it... Since I wasn't sure about it, I got a bag to share with Shawn. I was surprised when the guy offered me salt for the mangos, what? salty mango? thanks, but no thanks... well maybe I should have accepted. Mangos were not was I was expecting at all. They were really sour, maybe with the salt it might have gotten better, ughhhh. We didn't finish it, pfff. Ok, we need something for the after taste...

Then another guy came with a big container. He was yelling "pan de almidon, pan de maiz" (starch bread, corn bread). Ok, let's try them. I called the guy and asked him to open the container, the breads looked nice and weren't big. We got one of each. We weren't hungry, just wanted to try something different.
patacones & beer, what a lunch, hehe
The par de almidon (starch) didn't have much flavor, it was sort of plain but good though - perfect after that mango's unpleasant surprise. The corn one was sweet and nice. They both were a good choice.

Ok, it was starting to get a bit windy, so better starting going back. It was still early, so we'd go to the rental car to see if they had a car for the weekend. But in our way we stopped for a snack, hahaha, what a surprise! After a mini research of the area, we ended up going to a small restaurant. We wouldn't order anything special, just something to drink and patacones (fried plantain). Shawn got beer and I got my mora juice, yay!!! back to the mora juice without sugar addiction - yummy! This is one thing I noticed here. There weren't many places offering fresh juices, so finding it here was a pleasant surprise :)

We checked the rental place, but they didn't have cars just a big truck, damn! Ok, we'd check somewhere else tomorrow.
grilling shrimps, yummy!!!
Now, we had to go back home. It was getting late and in order to save time, we took a cab. When we arrived to the house, we saw that Roger was already starting to cook. Well, he has already made a big bowl of cebiche with shrimps, calamari and the tuna. But for the night we'd have skewers of shrimp, chicken (special for Hazel and Wally who didn't like shrimps much) and veggies (after my request :) )

While he was cooking he decided to try something new and chopped some plantains, and fried them with peanut crumbs. I think that the idea was bringing that to the party too, but I wouldn't say who, but somebody couldn't stop eating them, hahaha. Well, it was his b-day. Oooops! I think I said a bit too much, hahaha.

At 6:30pm we all went downstairs. We were having the party at the patio on the first floor.
How old are you? hahaha
There was a lot of food: skewers and Hazel brought later her famous stuffed jalapenos.  And to drink: wine (for me and Hazel), rum and beer (a whole case which was finished by the end of the night). We were just chatting and enjoying the nice weather. It wasn't too warm, there was a cool breeze, how nice!

We ordered later a pizza. It was funny trying to give the address to the pizza place, hahaha, but we succeded at the end. When pizza was over, Hazel came with a tall chocolate cake. The frost was Shawn's favorite, it had peanut butter! I don't eat chocolate, but could see it was tasty since everybody enjoyed the cake a lot.

It was a very nice night. I enjoyed the company of my new friends and I'm happy Shawn spent his first b-day in Ecuador surrounded by people who really care about him. Well, after 2 bottles of wine and a case of beer, it was time to go to bed :)
